Making a purchase through one of these links helps support this blog. I think the 2010 also refers to tables of planetary positions. This post may contain affiliate links. I think the charts in Nightwatch are probably Epoch 2000 as well. The Fiction Star Date is displayed in the field below. ![]() Those coordinates are Epoch 2000, and will be good through at least 2025. Select the wanted date (default is current date) and click the button 'Start'. So eventually all the tables with the right ascention and declination of the objects in Turn Left at Orion will be outdated. In fact, the change is so slight that, as Jarad said, publishers only bother updating their sky atlases every 50 years. Over a period of 5 or 10 years this is not noticable. The right ascention and declination of a given object will change gradually over time because of the wobble in the earth's axis of rotation. While the star's motion can usually only be detected over many hundreds to thousands of years, what does change are the celestial coordinates (right ascention and declination). Turn Left at Orion is primarily a reference for deep sky objects, which don't move as the planets do, so other than the chart of planet positions, our books should be good for years to come. But any sky-chart program or foldout chart in a magazine will show you where and when you can see the planets after that. ![]() The only thing that will be lacking after 2006 is the tables telling the positions of the planets- they only go to 2006. I have the 2nd edition of Turn Left at Orion. The positions of the stars themselves change very little over time. ![]()
